Global warming may cause extreme droughts in India, World Bank warns

WASHINGTON: Global warming could lead to more extreme droughts in large parts of India, resulting in widespread food shortages and hardship in the country, in the next few decades, a new World Bank report warned today.

The impact of a possible global temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius in the next few decades threatens to trap millions of people in poverty, according to the report.

The soaring temperatures will also drive regular food shortages in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Shifting rain patterns in South Asia due to warming could leave some parts under water and others without enough water for power generation, irrigation, or drinking, the report said.

"Events like the devastating Pakistan floods of 2010, which affected more than 20 million people, could become common place. More extreme droughts in large parts of India could lead to widespread food shortages and hardship," the report said.

Another impact of climate change could be degradation and loss of reefs in South East Asia possibly resulting in reduced fish stocks and coastal communities, while cities could be more vulnerable to increasingly violent storms, it said.

The new report builds on a World Bank report released late last year, which concluded the world would warm by 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century if we did not take concerted action now.

This new report looks at the likely impacts of present day, 2 degrees Celsius and 4 degrees Celsius warming on agricultural production, water resources, coastal ecosystems and cities across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South East Asia.

World's top five slimmest smartphones

China's Huawei unveiled its flagship smartphone, the Ascend P6, at its first standalone launch event on Tuesday, underlining its ambitions to compete with Apple and Samsung in the top tier of mobile technology.

The launch, at an arts venue in North London, takes a cue from Apple

and Samsung, both of which have made new product announcements at high profile events for a number of years. At a time when competition in the smartphone market has intensified like never before, we take a look at some of the slimmest smartphone available.
Huawei Ascend P6 (6.18 mm)
The company says the device, at 6.18 mm thick, is the world's slimmest. It has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera, designed for taking "selfies", or pictures of the owner to be shared on social media networks. The Ascend P6 uses Huawei's customised version of Google's Android operating system.

Apple iPhone 5 (7.6mm)
All of those picking up the iPhone 5 will have the same reaction: this thing is amazingly light. You've probably heard the numbers by now (20% lighter than the predecessor, as well as beating most of the opposition too at 112g.) However, through extended use this problem quickly disappears. The overall effect of the phone is still a chassis designed for strength, and so it feels solid, if somehow a little hollow; pleasantly, though, it sits more anonymously in the pocket.

Motorola Razr M (8.3 mm)
Google's Motorola Mobility powered by an Intel processor features a wide screen and longer-life battery to better compete against Apple's iPhone and Samsung. While this phone lacks in some areas, it still has a clear screen, a simple OS and a really strong battery at its heart. The build of the phone is not only good but also a little more unique than most handsets, since the back is made of Kevlar. At 8.3 mm thick, the phone earns its place among the slimmest smartphones in the market.

The new Motorola Razr M smartphone is displayed at the launch of three new smartphones under the Razr brand that will become available for Verizon customers in New York City. AFP

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S (8.7 mm)
The arrival of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S illustrates how incredibly fast things are moving in the world of Android hardware. The phone is a slim, bright, powerful Android smartphone that shows off the mobile operating system to its very best. The screen is fantastic and the processor and memory perform well enough to keep the Android experience running smoothly and quickly.

Samsung Note II (8.5 mm):
Samsung Note II is the combination of the raw power and next generation screen technology that really wowes its users, and the improved functionality of the S Pen takes it from a fun item to something that most users will be pulling out on a regular occasion. Packed with tons of features, the phone is 8.5 mm thick and among the slimmest smartphones available.

Champions Trophy semi-final Live Score: England vs South Africa

Champions Trophy semi-final Live Score: England vs South AfricaZee Media Bureau

London: Live score and live updates of the semi-final match of the ICC Champions Trophy between England and South Africa.

LIVE SCORE» I LIVE COMMENTARY»

====================================================================================

South Africa 175/10 (38.4 overs): South Africa have posted 175/10 in the first semifinals of the ICC Champions Trophy against hosts England. Kleinveldt was the ninth wicket to fall after Broad had him caught by wicketkeeper Buttler. He scored 43(61b, 4X4, 6X1). The number 11th batsman Lonwabo Tsotsobe lasted for just one delivery as Buttler collected his sixth catch of the match. Tsotsobe's became Broad's third victim of the match. David Miller was not out on 56* (51b, 4X5, 6X2).

====================================================================================

South Africa 152/8 (35 overs): This is turning out to be an excellent partnership as South Africa have crossed 150-run mark. Off the 31st over came nine runs including a maximum over midwicket by Kleinveldt. Off the next over bowled by Bopara, came just a boundary by Kleinveldt. Four runs came off the next two. The 35th over saw Kleinveldt and Miller scoring a boundary each off Root. 11 came from it.

====================================================================================

South Africa 124/8 (30 overs): Miller and Kleinveldt are looking to take the innings forward and have conjured a partnership of some sort. The current pair has added 44 runs for the ninth wicket. Eight runs were scored from the 26th over including a boundary off the first delivery by Miller. A review was taken by England after Kleinveldt was struck on the pad by Finn in the same over but the decision was upheld. Off the next came just three runs while the 28th turned out to be productive for SA as 13 runs came in it including a six over long off by Miller. The 29th was a maiden while off the 30th came four runs.

====================================================================================

South Africa 94/8 (25 overs): Ryan McLaren could only add a single to his account before being run out by Jonathan Trott. The delivery from Tredwell struck McLaren on the pad and England appealed for lbw. However, McLaren was out of his crease and by that time Trott ran him out with an underarm throw. Chris Morris was the eighth South African wicket to fall after edging Tredwell's third delivery to wicketkeeper. He scored 3 (6b). The Proteas took powerplay in the 24th over. Steven Finn bowled the first over and Miller deposited the first delivery over long off fence for a maximum. Seven runs came from it. Rory Kleinveldt opened his account in the 25th over with a boundary. Six runs were scored in that over.
====================================================================================

South Africa 76/6 (20 overs): It seems that the tag of chokers is going to stick with the South African team for some time to come as they continue to lose wickets in what is turning out to be a one-sided contest. They have lost two more wickets in JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis. Duminy fell to James Tredwell after being bowled scoring just 3 (11b). Plessis became Tredwell's second victim after in the 19th over. He was caught by wicketkepper Buttler at the score of 26 (39b, 4X3). Off the first delivery of the 20th over, David Miller struck his first boundary.
====================================================================================

South Africa 52/4 (15 overs): South Africa are in a spot of trouble here after losing two more wickets in the past five overs. Robin Peterson was the third wicket to fall after being adjudged lbw off James Anderson. After having a talk with du Plessis, he decided to go against the review. He scored 30 (41b, 4X4). South Africa skipper was the fourth batsman to walk back to the dressing room after edging one from Stuart Broad to wicketkeeper Buttler. He was out for a duck.

====================================================================================

South Africa 45/2 (10 overs): Robin Peterson (30*) and Faf du Plessis (11*) did a little recovery job for the Proteas as they moved from 4/2 to to 45/2 after 10 overs. Left-arm spinner Peterson, who was once again promoted to No. 3, tried to take the attack to the opposition by hitting some boundaries.

====================================================================================

South Africa 16/2 (5 overs): South Africa have made disastrous start to their innings, losing two quick wickets in the first two overs of the match. Colin Ingram fell in the very first over as James Anderson trapped him in front of wickets for a duck. In the next over, Steve Finn also got the taste of success as he removed dependable Hashim Amla for just 1. After 5 overs, South Africa were struggling at 16/2.

====================================================================================

England have won the toss and decided to bowl first.

South African pace spearhead Dale Steyn has failed a fitness test and he won't be playing the semi-final match against England. It is a big blow for South Africa.

There is a bad news for England also as off-spinner Graeme Swann and all-rounder Tim Bresnan have been ruled out of injury.

====================================================================================

Preview: South Africa will look to shed their big tournament `chokers` tag that has haunted them for long as they go into the first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy against strong contenders England here on Wednesday, in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

England topped Group A and will play South Africa in the last-four stage after Sri Lanka knocked holders Australia out of the tournament with a 20-run win at The Oval last night.

Sri Lanka, who finished second in Group A, will take on reigning world champions and Group B toppers India in the second semifinal at Cardiff on Thursday.

South Africa advanced to the semifinals on superior net run-rate after their rain-marred last Group B match against the West Indies in Cardiff ended in a tie.

For South Africa -- often dubbed `chokers` for losing from promising positions -- their only ICC trophy came way back in 1998 when they won the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy, then known as ICC Knock-Out Trophy, in Bangladesh.

Thereafter, the Proteas failed to advance beyond the semifinal stages of major tournaments despite having strong outfits. But come tomorrow, the A B de Villiers-led side would be hoping to turn the tide.

South Africa witnessed a mixed outing in the group stage of the tournament. They lost their opening game to India before getting the better of Pakistan, while their last game against the West Indies ended in a tie.

However, South Africa got a shot in the arm in their last game when pace spearhead Dale Steyn returned to the playing XI after missing the opening two group encounters due to a side strain.

Nitish Kumar wins trust vote, says BJP won't win in 2014

Nitish Kumar said India was built on secular foundations and his party would not tolerate anyone trying to cause religious divide.
Nitish Kumar
Nitish Kumar - IANS
Three days after he dumped the BJP, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday proved his majority in the assembly and declared that his former ally won't win the next Lok Sabha battle.
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of now trying to impose divisive politics, he said the politics of consultation which the BJP believed in under Atal Bihari Vajpayee had ended.
In a speech in the assembly during a trust motion he moved to prove his majority, Nitish Kumar said India was built on secular foundations and his party would not tolerate anyone trying to cause religious divide.
"The country should be run in a manner so as to take everyone along... Coalition governments are the norm now. No party should be under the false premise that they can run the country on their own steam," he said.
"The work ethics of Atalji (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) was based on how to take everyone along, based on consultations... But now it has changed," he added.
Nitish Kumar sailed through with 126 votes in his favour after 91 BJP members and a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) legislator walked out of the 243-member house before the voting.
Criticising the BJP, with which his party split last week after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was made the party's election campaign chief, Nitish Kumar said the BJP's dream of ruling India would be shattered.
He said the BJP had no chance to win the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
"Even if we remained with them, notching up 200 seats would be difficult... Don't be under the illusion that you can do it alone. This is the time of coalitions," he said.
Taking a dig at Modi's Gujarat model of development, Nitish Kumar said: "What vikas (development) model is this where you improve areas that are already good? What kind of improvement is it?"
He said the BJP had benefited by aligning with his Janata Dal-United (JD-U).
"We will not tolerate thopna (imposition of views). We are for the policy of taking everyone along and against divisive policies," he asserted.
Nitish Kumar got the support of JD-U's 117 legislators, four independents, four of the Congress and the sole Communist Party of India member. One JD-U legislator is in jail.
Those who voted against Nitish Kumar included 22 members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and two independents.
Soon after the JD-U ended its 17-year-old alliance with the BJP Sunday, Nitish Kumar said he would seek a vote of confidence at a special session of the assembly Wednesday.
Nitish Kumar called off the alliance and his colleague Sharad Yadav quit as convenor of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance following differences with the BJP over the growing clout of Modi.

North India floods toll climbs to 150

Kedarnath shrine intact, say reports; thousands of pilgrims still remain stranded

With skies clearing, rescue of stranded people and relief operations intensified on Wednesday in Uttarakhand where the death toll in the rain and floods shot up to 150 as thousands of pilgrims still remained stranded.
Reports on Wednesday suggested that the famous Kedarnath shrine, where 50 people died in the landslide that accompanied torrential rain and flash floods, is intact notwithstanding the heavy damage all around.
With rains abating in the last two days, there were no fresh incidents of landslides and flooding.
Accompanied by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made an aerial survey of the worst-hit areas while Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh also undertook a similar mission separately.
Uttarakhand Principal Secretary Om Prakash said the death toll in the state has gone up to 150 but was not in a position to give the exact estimate since several villages in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts in the upper reaches were still under water.
Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna told reporters that he was also not in a position to give the exact estimate of death and destruction which he said was unprecedented in the state.
It would take one year to restore normalcy on the road to Kedarnath from the after effects of the cloud burst which he described as a “Himalayan tsunami“.
The first priority is to rescue the stranded people especially those on pilgrimage from various parts of the country, distribution of medicines and rehabilitation and compensation for the affected, he said.
The weather cleared in most places making it easier for rescue personnel to launch operations for those stranded, especially in Badrinath shrine where 12,000 pilgrims are still stuck.
Disaster Management authorities said in Chamoli that eight bodies were recovered by villagers late last evening from Bansinarayan area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
Chamoli Additional District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar said 1,500 pilgrims and locals have been evacuated so far from Ghanghariya, Duendhar and Pulna from near Hemkund Sahib in the district to Joshimath relief camps.
With the improvement in weather many more stranded pilgrims are likely to be evacuated to safety by the evening, he said adding evacuation of pilgrims from Badrinath is next on their agenda. One thousand persons have also been evacuated from Kedarnath, an official in Rudraprayag said.
The officials said evacuating people to safer places is their priority as recovery of bodies can be taken up later.
The Chief Minister said very heavy casualties are feared, electric poles have been uprooted and several roads have been damaged in the calamity, the scale of which was not imagined.
5,000 people are in Gauri Kund.
With the weather clearing in most places, operations commenced in full swing to rescue the stranded, especially in Badrinath shrine where 12,000 pilgrims are still stuck.
While 1,500 pilgrims and locals were rescued from in Chamoli district, 1,200 stranded tourists were evacuated in Rudraprayag.
Officials said that evacuating people to safer places was their priority as recovery of bodies can be taken up later.
On the steps being initiated by the government to provide succour to the victims, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in New Delhi that IAF helicopters have been deployed to evacuate stranded people from Gaurikund while a control centre has been established in Badrinath.
“Fourteen teams comprising 540 persons of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Uttarakhand. 62,790 people are stranded in Uttarakhand. 5,000 people have been rescued by the Army,” Mr. Shinde said.
Rescue operations were also on in rain-ravaged tribal Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh for the second day on Wednesday and one state and two IAF choppers were evacuating stranded people at various points in Kinnaur district and adjoining Kaza area of Spiti.
“The exact number of people stranded at various places is not known, but the priority is to evacuate tourists and the aged and ailing persons first,” HP Principal Secretary (Home), Tarun Sridhar said.
ITBP DG Ajay Chadha said that it was difficult to give exact figures of those rescued as a number of agencies were involved in the relief efforts.

iPhone 4S Tips and Tricks

These simple tips and tricks will help you travel from one destination to the next, get more done with Siri, and make the things you do every day even easier.

See how to use Siri.

When you press and hold the Home button, Siri asks, “What can I help you with?” Tap the “i” button to see a detailed list of the ways Siri can help you get things done.

Tell Siri who’s who.

Tell Siri about your relationships, such as “Erin is my wife” or “Rick is my dad.” Then you can say “Text my wife” or “Call dad” and Siri knows who you mean.

Set your locations.

Be sure to enter your home and work addresses in Contacts. That way, Siri can remind you to do things when you leave or arrive at either place.

Siri writes email.

You can dictate a quick response to an email. Just say "Reply," then tell Siri your message.

iPhone 4S takes dictation.

Instead of typing an email, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking. Tap done, and your words will appear as text. Use dictation to write messages, take notes, update your Facebook status, tweet, and more.

Quick, take a photo.

The camera icon is always there on your lock screen. Just swipe up to open the Camera app.

Get there with Quick Route.

When Maps drops a pin on a location, you can get turn-by-turn directions to that location almost instantly. Just tap the Quick Route button next to the location’s name.

As you’re looking at a map, use two fingers to tilt or rotate the view. Maps keeps the names of the streets and places where they belong. So everything’s easy to read, and you won’t get lost.

Head north in a tap.

Rotate a map a few times, and you could lose your north-south orientation. But it’s easy to get it back. Just tap the compass icon in the upper-right corner.

Refresh your inbox with a swipe.

Anticipating an important email? Refresh your mailboxes in an instant with a quick downward swipe.

Take websites full screen.

When you really want to see the whole picture, turn your iPhone to landscape and tap the full-screen icon to view web pages without distractions.

Get back to your draft.

In Mail, touch and hold the Compose button to switch to your last saved message draft.

See what’s up.

Notification Center lets you know about missed messages, calendar invitations, friend requests, and more. New notifications appear on top of the screen. Swipe down to see a summary of recent notifications.

Set reminders.

Assign due dates to items on your to-do list and Reminders will send you alerts. Add locations, and you’ll get alerts when you leave or when you arrive. You can also choose priority levels and write notes.

Tweet it. Post it.

Sign in once under Settings, and you can tweet or update your Facebook status directly from Safari, Photos, Camera, and Maps. Or ask Siri to do it for you.

Broadcast live with AirPlay.

Create an event fast.

Touch anywhere on the calendar to create an event. To change your schedule, just drag events around. Tap for day, month, or list view. And rotate to landscape to see an entire week.

Everything has an alert.

Assign a specific tone or create a custom vibration for new mail, Calendar alerts, tweets, and reminders. In Settings, tap Sounds to assign each a tone or vibration.

Locate your lost iPhone.

If you’ve lost your iPhone, Find My iPhone can help you locate it. Just go to Settings > iCloud and turn on the Find My iPhone feature.

Add PDFs to iBooks.

From a Mail message or a web page, touch and hold the PDF icon or link, then select “Open in iBooks.”

Lighten the load.
In your wallet.

Passbook stores your boarding passes, gift cards, coupons, and more. So when you’re boarding at the gate or checking out at the café, just open Passbook, find the pass you need, and have it scanned — right from your iPhone.

Create web clips.

To add a website to your Home screen, visit the page in Safari and tap the Share button at the bottom of the Safari window. Then tap Add to Home Screen.

Learn some keyboard tricks.

  • Tap the space bar twice, and iPhone adds a period and capitalizes the next word.
  • To enter a number or symbol quickly, touch and hold
